| i've officially be in san francisco for five and a half years. i never thought i'd be here for this long. i used to complain about it a lot. having moved from the east coast with proximity to nyc, it never seemed like a *real* city to me. in some ways, it still doesn't. however, it has surprised me, pleasantly, in the last couple of years. here's what i consider the best of san francisco. |
| restaurants dim sum: yank sing, 101 spear street @mission, rincon center ask anyone in sf where the best dim sum is, and they'll probably say ton kiang. yes, they are good. however, there are TWO places worth going to for dim sum. yank sing is the civilized person's dim sum restaurant. here's why: 1. you can make reservations. 2. they validate parking in the indoor garage at rincon center. in addition to these oxymoronic ameneties, the food is as good if not better than ton kiang's. tapas/small dishes to share: destino, 1815 market street, between mccoppin and pearl i have been here three times and have been pleased each time. yes, the service can be a little slow, but the food and the charming owner who is often the host makes up for it. i'd recommend the house ceviche and the scallops. delish! the portions are pretty good sized. i think that two can eat comfortably with three starters and three will be satisified with four. their caphirina and mojito are among the best in the city. have one if you're waiting for a table. alternatively, you can eat at the bar, but it's small. the whole restaurant is small, so reservations are highly suggested. rnm, 598 haight @steiner, 551.7900 |
