i have often been told that i have strong and purposeful hands. my previous boyfriends have enjoyed the touch of my hands on their necks and shoulders -- a free and impromptu massage whenever they needed. one of them encouraged me to take up ceramics. i had considered this before his suggestion, but never made the time for it.

it took the breakup (among other things) for me to actually act upon my interest, which reinforces my belief that everythuing happens for a reason.

in may, 2002, i attended my first ceramics class and found a creative and theraputic outlet. my hands have given others pleasure, and through working with clay, i've gained my own satisfaction in both a temporal and lasting manifestation of my actions.

below are a few samples of some recent works. this was the first time that i actually felt comfortable and satisfied enough with my work to give to friends as christmas gifts.

the raku process

where i take class
when my sister came to visit me in february, she wanted to take some of my pieces back to chicago. i let her choose. this is one of the pieces. it happens to be my favorite to date. i guess we really are sisters. this is the other one she chose.

this one i gave to my friends david and karl. this is the second gift i have made for them. the first was a set of inlay pendants to celebrate their marriage.
i had originally intended for this bowl to be shaped like a frustum. the clay became too thin though, and started to buckle. this was my save. it's one of my favorite pieces. i gave it my friend rick who has everything, except a blue bowl by me.

among the three that are shown here, everyone notes this one as the favorite. i think it's the blue on the inside. i had intended a pristine white on the outside, but in my haste, i dripped. i made them intentional after the first. it was a gift to one of my first sf friends, nan.
music

since january, i've been taking violin lessons. i started off with a piece that i had played years ago, a concerto by haydn. i enjoyed this piece tremendously. it made me practice a lot of the mechanical techniques that i would use in future pieces.

another cool thing about playing again was that my teacher and i started playing music together. we play the bach for double violins to mix it up a bit in my lesson. it's really a beautiful piece.

my latest piece is the bruch concerto no.1. it's shmaltzy and fun, but it's definitely intimidating. i recently started the second movement. it's hard.
